Limit Breaks are back in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and there’s nothing more satisfying than unleashing a barrage of powerful attacks on a staggered boss. Even after playing for dozens of hours, you may not full understand the true power of Limit Breaks – how to power them up or how to unlock the ultimate Level 3 Limit Break for all your party members.

We’re going to break down exactly what you need to know right here. It’s actually not that complicated, but the game really doesn’t do a good job explaining. Grab your biggest Buster Sword and let’s deal max damage with Limit Breaks.

How Do Limit Breaks Work?

Limit Breaks are powerful attacks that do not require ATB to use.

  • The Limit Break gauge fills as you take damage or stagger enemies.
  • All characters have Limit Break Level 1 and Level 2 automatically unlocked.

To use Level 2 Limit Breaks, you must Level Up your Limit Break mid-battle.

Level 3 Limit Breaks:

  • Level 3 Limit Breaks are locked in Folios. You’ll be able to unlocked them late in the game.
How To Level Up Limit Breaks
  • To use Level 2 or Level 3 Limit Breaks, you’ll need to unlock Synergy Abilities.
  • Synergy Abilities are unlocked through Folios and utilize two party members. Two characters will unleash a combination attack with special bonuses.
  • One of those bonuses is raising the Limit Level.
  • Cloud’s Firework Blade is one of the first Synergy Abilities with Aerith. This will increase Limit Level when used.

How To Unlock Level 3 Limit Breaks

  • Level 3 Limit Breaks are the final node on all character Folios.
  • To unlock new tiers of Folios, increase Party Level. Party Level is increased by completing Region Intel, Quests and other minigame activities. Talking to your party members during some story events will also increase Party Level.
  • Reach Party Level 9 to unlock Level 3 Limit Breaks.
  • To unlock Level 3 Limit Breaks earlier, you can reset Skill Cores. Press [Triangle] to reset a single skill core or [Square] to reset all skill cores.
  • You can refund any skills as many times as you want with no cost.
  • Once unlocked, you’ll need to use two Synergy Abilities to increase Limit Level to 3. Make sure to have Level Increase Synergy Abilities unlocked for your party!
  • Level 3 Limit Breaks are the most powerful in the game and deal devastating damage to staggered bosses or enemies.
