The Witcher 3 Is Receiving A Surprising Update In 2024

November 15, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

CD Projekt Red shocks fans.

CD Projekt Red is known for bringing out some thrilling and in-depth RPG experiences. They have released The Witcher franchise to massive fanfare, and after a very rough stumble out of the gate, Cyberpunk 2077 has turned itself around. We know several projects are in the works at CD Projekt Red right now. However, before they finally closed the book on some of their past projects, the development team gave a surprising update in 2024. Specifically, the update will land on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Here’s what the development team revealed earlier today.

Taking to X, the developers from CD Projekt Red unveiled that a mod editor is finally coming to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. After initially launching in 2015, the game will soon flourish with new mods. The X post noted that those interested can edit quests and content within the game or make something brand new.

That should open the door for thrilling experiences and content releases that will keep players chugging along on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. After all, we know that more content is slated for The Witcher franchise, so this might be an excellent way to keep fans interested in the franchise while they continue working on the next project.

We're thrilled to announce that we're working on a mod editor for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt! ⚔️

It will allow you to create your own experiences in the game by making something completely new or editing existing quests and content. We’re planning on releasing it for free in 2024.… pic.twitter.com/e2kvXRqegZ

It’s also worth noting that the developers are making a big transition. We know that they are moving away from their in-house game engine. Instead, they will be moving over to the Unreal Engine. That’s one of the reasons we’re not seeing more content and expansion launches for Cyberpunk 2077, as Phantom Liberty marked their last big release under their current game engine. Likewise, this might be one of the last big drops into the marketplace before the developers move away from their in-house engine.

We’re not given a specific date as to when the new mod editor will be released for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Instead, the developers only note that they plan to release it for free sometime in 2024. Of course, mods are already present for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. But with the new mod editor release, there should be a far more manageable approach to making content for fans to enjoy.

We’ll just need to wait and see when the editor will drop and then start seeing what modding communities are able to come up with before The Witcher receives its next mainline installment. It’s always exciting to see developers hand over the keys for communities to continue to support their favorite games. So even with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt being an older game now, there could be plenty of resurgence moments depending on the content drops released by fans.
