Look, we all know you want to enjoy video games all the time, but you sometimes don’t have the money to do so. With these games? You’ll have plenty of options without spending a dime in 2024.
Update: We will continue to update this list periodically throughout the year, so you will likely see some games removed or added. These games are not ranked in any particular order, as the focus here is to showcase titles we are excited to see hit the marketplace.
#20 Marvel Rivals
Platform: PC PS5 X/S
Release Date: December 6, 2024
Steam | PlayStation | Xbox
There are many reasons to love Marvel Rivals, and over ten million people have already enjoyed it so far. Yet, have you wondered why the game is already exploding to such levels of popularity? One of the reasons is the Marvel branding on it, but the other reason is that the game is free-to-play. Thus, if you don’t have to pay anything to enjoy it, why not give it a shot? Exactly!
To that end, the game is really fun and embraces the superhero aesthetic in multiple ways, including letting you be whoever you want to be with no true restrictions. So give it a shot!
#19 Ocean World: Eden Crafters
Isn’t it nice when a game developer offers you a decent-sized glimpse into its new title to show the potential of what lies within it? In Ocean World: Eden Crafters, you’ll get to play the first episode for free and see the unique terraforming gameplay that lies within.
Your goal was to find a planet that humanity could live on, and you succeeded! The problem is that the planet has a “giant wave” problem, so you need to do some serious terraforming to get the planet “up to snuff” before the water snuffs everything out!
The game is still being built, but it’ll have co-op, massive crafting, and tons of exploration to do once it’s finished.
#18 Off The Grid
Multiplayer battle royale titles are truly a dime a dozen in today’s gaming world. However, with Off The Grid, there is hope that it’s something better. Three gaming companies have come together to develop the title and, with it, throw a more serious narrative into the battle royale-style gameplay that we’ve all seen by now.
You’ll take part in a “game” set in a dystopian cyberpunk island where corporations are having people fight for their amusement. With 150 players involved, there will be plenty of fights. Yet, there will also be dozens of hours of story to involve yourself in. You know, if you live that long.
#17 Sky: Children of the Light
Some free-to-play titles want to invoke certain emotions as you play them. In Sky: Children of the Light, you’ll find yourself in a game that wants you to relax while you go and help those around you. You are a being with a light that can help cure the darkness that has spread around the realm. Just as important, your ancestors have gotten their spirits trapped within the land due to the darkness. You’ll go to them and free them so they can finally be at peace.
You can play the game alone or with friends and witness the beauty of the world as you fly around and see all of its many layers.
#16 Dark and Darker
They say that finding the treasure is easy, but getting out is hard. Who said that? Probably the people who made Dark and Darker. In this co-op looting title, you’ll become one of a group of adventures who decide to enter an ancient citadel. Why do you want to do that? There’s treasure inside, duh! However, the challenge won’t be just getting to the treasure, it’ll be getting out alive with it!
After all, within this dark place lie many traps, monsters, and other players who want to get the loot for themselves! The free version of the title gives you full access to the “Normal Mode” and will even let you upgrade if you want!
#15 Nightmare Kart
Are you looking for an old-school gaming title that’ll bring back some nostalgic feelings of your past gaming life? If so, then try Nightmare Kart! The game has you as a person basically kidnapped into becoming a part of a local race tradition. That means that to get the answers you seek, you must work your way through the races and survive the various weapons tossed at you by other racers.
The good news is that you can fight back, and if you use your weapons properly, you can destroy their cars before they destroy yours.
What is the point of all that’s happening? You’ll have to race to the end to find out!
#14 Arena Breakout: Infinite
Are you ready for your next mission? In Arena Breakout: Infinite, you’ll have the opportunity to build up your soldier and squad to take on the wild chaos that is the Dark Zone. Here, it’s all about getting the loot and getting out alive. That’s not easy when there are plenty of foes out there who are trying to do the same thing!
The customization within the game is deep, and you’ll want to analyze every choice you’ve made with your soldier if you want to make it out alive. Oh, and did we mention the game is free? Because it is, and that makes it something you must try out.
#13 Stormgate
Real-time strategy games may not be for everyone, but a free to play entry in the genre certainly piques my interest. The game sees you facing off against hordes of alien invaders. It has a lot of different game modes for you to experiment with. You can try playing against AI enemies, take a chance in a competitive PvP match, or work together with other players in a variety of different co-op focused modes. The different classes for each faction offer a lot of different ways to execute your strategies. And if you’re not finding quite what you’re looking for then Stormgate also has an editor mode on offer that will allow you to craft the game you envision.
#12 ALARA Prime
There are plenty of multiplayer shooters out there, but ALARA Prime attempts to do something different by giving you different ways of thinking about gameplay and different modes to play in.
In the title, you’ll be part of a team of four and have to achieve various goals. Each squad member will choose the class they want to be, so pick one that fits your playstyle.
Then, dive into modes like “Transmission,” where one team will defend an uplink module, and the other two teams will attempt to kill them and take it over!
There’s plenty of strategy to be had here, so dive in and see where it takes you!
#11 Once Human
We tried to keep titles not released yet in 2024 off this list, but we’ll make an exception in the case of Once Human. Why? It could be a truly unique adventure if it plays out how it describes itself.
The game puts you as a survivor of an alien invasion. The twist is that not only did the aliens win, but they’ve infected EVERYTHING on the planet. The land, the water, the food, everything is filled with their influence.
You’ll have a choice to make as you fight back and use their own powers against them. Do you risk staying fed and physically healthy to keep the fight going, even if it costs you your sanity? Or do you risk starving yourself so the aliens can’t control you further?
#10 Sheepy: A Short Adventure
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if your favorite plushie or stuffed animal came to life and what it would be like to interact with them?
Well, Sheepy: A Short Adventure is a variation of that concept. The title is based on a plushie named Sheepy, who must wander through a weird world that was forgotten long ago. How did Sheepy get there? What does Sheepy have to do to get out? How many times are we going to say Sheepy in this description?
Some of these questions will be answered once you play the game for yourself!
#9 UFL
If you don’t know what the UFL is, don’t worry, it’s a name associated for a different kind of football/soccer title. After all, when it comes to sports, most of the titles are associated with a league and the head of it. But due to the FIFA/EA split, and the dominance that FIFA has had over soccer games in the past, a title like UFL had to come out to try and challenge the status quo.
In the game you’ll take control of a club and attempt to win games through intense but fair gameplay.
So if you’re looking for an alternative soccer title to try, be on the lookout for this one.
#8 The First Descendant
Want a top-notch-looking shooter that’ll give you variety while also giving you unique boss fights to do? The First Descendant puts you in a world where you play characters known as Descendants. Each is unique, so pick the one that best suits you.
Then, through the power of co-op, team up with your friends and see if you can bring down the monsters invading your world and trying to wipe out humanity.
Your Descendant can be outfitted with all kinds of weapons and abilities, so don’t be afraid to tweak things so you can see what they can do!
Are you ready to jump into the action?
#7 Star Wars: Hunters
Conflict typically only happens between empires and their rebellions in a certain galaxy far, far away. But in Star Wars: Hunters, you will have conflicts for a much more basic reason: entertainment.
In the game, you’ll be part of an entertainment series called “Hunters of the Outer Rim.” It’s one of the most popular things around, and it’s your job to pick the character you can use to lead your team to victory!
You’ll be anything from soldiers to bounty hunters, to Jedi and Sith. There are numerous ways to play. So take to the battlefield and see if you can come out on top.
#6 Path of Exile 2
Path of Exile 2 exists alongside the original Path of Exile. It brings a new large story to the table for fans of the first game but also incorporates new systems for skills, classes, and more. The gameplay style should be familiar for those who have played the original game. A dark fantasy styled action RPG where you can play online alongside or against other players. Path of Exile is one of the best free to play RPGs on PC and the sequel looks to be improving on everything that made the original an instant classic.
#5 King Arthur: Legends Rise
The legend of King Arthur has been told many times over. But what might surprise people is that game developers keep finding unique ways to rehash it. In King Arthur: Legends Rise, you’ll take part in a quest as a young Arthur to try and save the realm from the dark entities that plague it.
To do so, you’ll need not just Arthur but a squad of heroes to back you up. Roam the land and find these heroes and see if they are what you need for victory. Then, forge mighty weapons and take the fight to the darkness while ensuring Camelot thrives.
#4 Silent Hill: The Short Message
Konami is ready to bring back the fear-filled franchise, and Silent Hill: The Short Message is their first step toward making that happen.
In the game, you play as Anita, who gets a message from a friend stating, “Can’t Leave Til You Find It.” That odd message takes her to an apartment building where nothing is as it seems, and survival is just as important as finding your friend.
But will this “short message” ensure a “short stay” at this place? You’ll need to keep your wits about you as you find out! It might be a free-to-play title, but that doesn’t mean danger doesn’t await you within!
#3 Throne and Liberty
Are you a fan of MMORPGs? If so, you’ll want to check out Throne and Liberty because it’s a game where you’ll have plenty to do, plenty of people to play against, and it’s all free. You ever notice that lots of MMORPGs are free to play nowadays? Just saying.
Anyway, one of the hooks of the game is that the core goal of just about every player will be to take the throne of the realm for themselves. But how they do that is up to them. Plus, once they do it, they need to defend it from others who want it for themselves. Think you can handle that?
#2 ASTRA: Knights of Veda
It’s bad enough when an RPG world has to deal with a mad tyrant. But when the armies of good that were meant to stop him were corrupted by a literal “death tree” that made them into zombies, now things have gone to far!
Thankfully, the goddess Veda has picked other champions to free the land, and you are one of them! The world is full of dangers, but with you and the other knights at your side, you can bring it all back to the way it should be. With unique visuals and challenging combat, this is one RPG you’ll want to check out.
#1 Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks
Forget everything you know about this universe and the games within its franchise. No, seriously, forget all about them. Why? Because Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks is nothing like anything you’ve played in the universe before. Instead, the game is about vehicular combat taken to the extreme. You’ll play as various characters and outfit their rides to take the abuse of other players while dishing out plenty of damage yourself.
No matter what your style of play is, you’ll find a weapon that works for you. The battles are going to be intense, so prepare yourself as best you can and then dive into the fray to destroy all in front of you!

Deadhaus Sonata, ARC Raiders and Ashfall were removed due to now being slated for 2025.
