SSX Shipping with Online Pass

January 30, 2012 by Josh Harmon

The upcoming reboot of EA’s classic snowboarding franchise is the latest game to punish those who buy used.

Gameplay footage of EA's upcoming SSX reboot has revealed that the game will be shipping with an Online Pass code, forcing secondhand buyers to pay an additional fee to access the game's content.

The news was first reported by Destructoid, who noticed that shots of the game's menu featured prompts to enter or purchase an Online Pass in the lower left corner.

Designed to deincentivize used game sales, EA's Online Pass program locks some portion of the on-disc content to a single-use code included in the game's box. Those who purchase a used copy will be unable to access the locked features until they purchase their own code, usually in the $10 range, from the Xbox Live Marketplace or PlayStation Network Store.

The program is most frequently used to lock out a game's online multiplayer component, though single-player content isn't exempt by any means, as evidenced by the recent discovery that Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning would use an Online Pass to cordon off an entire quest line.

EA has yet to announced which aspects of SSX will be linked to the Online Pass.
