Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Gets Title Update Ahead of Modern Warfare III Reveal Event

August 16, 2023 by Ryan Parreno

It’s a pivotal time for the franchise as everyone knows that changes are coming.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III gets a big reveal event tomorrow, August 17, 2023, at 10:30 PM Pacific. It looks like Activision has something huge planned in anticipation of it.

As reported by PlayStation Size on Twitter, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is getting a title update to version 01.023.000. That update news came with a change in icon, to the red image of Soap McTavish, which is apparently the key art for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III.

Now, PlayStation Size reports on the installation date for the update, which is also August 17, 2023, 9 AM Pacific. They also have download sizes of 3.234 GB for PlayStation 4 and 3.393 GB for PlayStation 5.

Given the timing and the file size, this may be the new Call of Duty Hub that we had reported on a few days ago. That Call of Duty Hub will show Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, and Call of Duty: Warzone under a single menu.

That rumor also added fuel to the fire that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III was originally made as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II DLC. It seems that Activision expects fans to play both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.

So, what that implies, is that on a storyline level, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III are connected, but the players will still experience them as completely separate games.

As for whether they will be playing it for that long is yet to be determined. We do know that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is the last game under Sony’s exclusive marketing contract for Call of Duty. Based on the precedent other games under that contract set, it’s likely that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III will be published to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows on Steam and Battle.net.

Where the franchise goes after that, we aren’t quite sure. It does seem to be an inevitability that Microsoft will finalize their purchase of Activision, and alongside that, the contracts Microsoft signed will go in effect.

That means the number of platforms Call of Duty can go on will grow exponentially, to include the Nintendo Switch, and various cloud gaming platforms owned by the likes of Nvidia, Ubitus, and Boosteroid.

Tomorrow’s reveal event will certainly be an important point for the franchise and its future. Make sure to read GameRanx for more updates on that event, and on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III.
