Racist Menu Items turn up in Minecraft

January 28, 2012 by Mat Growcott

An Afrikaan translation of Minecraft came with a few extra nuggets for your money.

A rogue translator has placed a naughty word in a version of Minecraft – try and see if you can see it. The picture above, courtesy of Kotaku, shows what happened when you switched your language to Afrikaans, the language of South Africa and Namibia. It has since been changed and the user who created the translation has been banned (and should have already been), but for a while people got  quite the shock.

This is thanks to a reliance on user-submitted translations of the game, the Mojang team not being able to handle every language the game is wanted in (and a "proper" translator for each language would be ridiculously expensive). This was also spotted by the community, but had been available to the public for a short time before it was taken down.

It's a shame really, that a game like Minecraft, popular worldwide, is going to look bad for somebody inserting immature comments onto their menu system. Perhaps some sort of higher-level user-moderation is needed? Then accepted users could check for things like this in "official" mods and Mojang won't end up with egg on their faces.
