Microsoft Drastically Cuts Back $1 Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Trial

August 8, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

No more month-long trial offers.

Microsoft has had quite a bit of success with its Xbox Game Pass model. This has proven to be a well worthwhile subscription service to attach yourself to, especially if you’re on the Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S console platforms. But if you were ever uncertain if the subscription service was right for you, then a trial is typically much appreciated. Fortunately, Microsoft had offered a $1 trial before that gave you a chance to give Xbox Game Pass Ultimate a go without digging further into your pockets.

That deal didn’t last forever. Instead, Microsoft killed off this trial for a small period of time before bringing it back earlier this year. Once again, players new to Xbox Game Pass could get the highest tier for a month with only $1. But now it looks like Microsoft has quietly made one more adjustment to this trial, and it significantly cuts down the amount of time you’ll have to try the subscription service out. If you head over to the official Xbox Game Pass portal from the Xbox website, you’ll find that the trial is only good for 14 days now.

So spending $1 will no longer guarantee you that month-long experience. It’s a bit of a bummer, especially if you were about to try this subscription service out. However, it’s worth noting that this is still for the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription tier. This means you’ll get online multiplayer, access to Xbox Game Pass, additional free perks, and EA Play. Meanwhile, the typical cost after the trial ends will be $16.99 per month. That’s the current price, as it wasn’t too long ago that Microsoft raised the prices of their Xbox Game Pass subscription services.

This wasn’t the only recent change for Xbox and its subscription services. If you don’t recall, this is the final month of Xbox Live Gold. That subscription service is being scrapped, and in its place will be Xbox Game Pass Core. You’ll find that your current subscriptions will move over to the new service for the same monthly fee. However, you’ll find that the free monthly games will be dropped. Instead, you’ll gain access to a small collection of Xbox Game Pass titles. Furthermore, we know that Microsoft will be adding more games to this collection around two to three times per year.
