New PlayStation 4 System Software Update Adds Remote Play For PC/Mac – Drops Tomorrow

April 5, 2016 by Mitchell Saltzman

New system software update dropping tomorrow for the PlayStation 4 will allow players to use Remote Play from their PC or Mac

PlayStation Remote Play

The PlayStation 4 System Software Update 3.50, codenamed Musashi, drops tomorrow and adds a number of substantial features to the PlayStation 4, including the ability for PC and Mac users to take advantage of Remote Play.

Remote Play is a feature for the PlayStation 4 that would traditionally allow PlayStation Vita owners to play their PlayStation 4 remotely through their handheld over a wifi network. With this update, that capability is being expanded on to both Windows and Mac platforms, specifically Windows 8.1, Windows 10 or later, OSX 10.10, and OSX 10.11.

Players will be able to set their resolution and frame rate based on their internet bandwidth, with options including 360p, 540p, and 720p at either 30 or 60 FPS. One Dualshock 4 controller can be used in Remote Play, and needs to be connected to the PC or Mac via USB cable.

Along with the expanded Remote Play options, update 3.50 also adds the ability to set your online status to “appear offline,” making you invisible to your friends list, the ability to create user scheduled events to invite friends to gameplay sessions, and a PlayStation Plus Hub that gives Plus members easier management of their online storage.

PlayStation Appear Offline

Remote Play has always been one of the most unique features of the PlayStation 4 and the new update will be especially handy for those who find themselves traveling a lot. Some of the other features, such as the ability to appear offline if you don’t want to be bothered by notifications, feel like they should’ve been there from the start, but better late than never.
