PlayStation 5 Sees A Big Resurgence In Europe

July 19, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

New chart data shows PS5 picks back up in momentum.

We’re a few years into the latest-generation console platforms for Microsoft and Sony. The Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 launch came in at a very interesting time. This was during a point in our history when we experienced a massive pandemic, and as a result, getting console units out into the marketplace was a struggle. Whether it was due to manufacturing, shipping, or scalpers, plenty of issues prevented these consoles from really getting out into players’ hands. But we’re beyond that point now, and you should have no trouble finding units available within your local retailers.

However, looking at some numbers and seeing just how the various console platforms are doing is always interesting. While we don’t typically cover sales, we did catch a report from Gamesindustry.biz that piqued our interest. It looks like, within Europe, there is a significant resurgence for the PlayStation 5. The report noted that sales for the PlayStation 5 console unit are up 116% within the past month. That’s a big number, and as a result, the PlayStation 5 was able to take back the top spot for console purchases. Previously the top spot was taken by the Nintendo Switch.

Remember, the Nintendo Switch recently saw a big launch with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. That is what prompted so many more units to be sold compared to the PlayStation 5. Meanwhile, it’s noted that the sales for the Xbox Series X/S were about the same as previous reports. So it looks like the PlayStation 5 is back in the limelight within the market, and that could be the case for a good little while. We recently reported that there was a rumored reveal for the PlayStation 5 Slim coming next month.

If that’s the case, we could see more consumers going out and purchasing a PlayStation 5 unit that’s smaller in profile and potentially had additional revisions to make it more appealing. Meanwhile, we know that Nintendo is working on the successor to the Nintendo Switch, but we have yet to see anything official regarding what this new console platform will entail over the current hybrid model. So, for now, we’ll just have to wait and see if Sony makes their big console model reveal and if Nintendo will start to tease the next console launch before 2023 wraps.
