Dark Souls 3 Review Roundup

April 4, 2016 by Ian Miles Cheong

The reviews for Dark Souls 3 are out. Here’s what the press is saying.

Dark Souls 3
will be out in about a week. Though it’s already available in Japan, gamers worldwide will have to wait until April 13 to get their hands on the game across the PC, Xbox One and PS4. Until its release, the only people playing it are those in Japan and the few game reviewers and streamers who’ve been given early access by Bandai Namco to write about the game and give you their impressions.

The question looming on everyone’s minds is: is it any good? We’ll share with you our own impressions of the game in due time, but a few other reviewers have since put up their reviews of the game, which appear to be largely positive.

Most of the reviews rate the game highly, with the lowest being Polygon’s 7. Phil Kollar wrote, “At this point, most Souls players know what they’re looking for in a new entry. Your personal expectations for the series will play a key part in your enjoyment of Dark Souls 3. If you play these games for the intense, controller-clenching combat and the excitement of invading other players’ worlds, then there’s a lot here to keep you busy and happy. But in so many important ways — its world design, its pacing, the technology powering it — Dark Souls 3 falls short of the mark.”

Elsewhere, IGN gave it high marks at 9.5. Chloi Rad wrote, “If Dark Souls 3 truly is the last in the series as we know it, then it’s a worthy send-off. Weapon arts allow stylish and versatile new moves without tarnishing the purity of the combat system. Lothric’s awe-inspiring locations provide visually stunning arenas for rigorous exploration and fierce face-offs with hosts of deadly enemies and even deadlier bosses. While not all the risky changes land as neatly as others, Dark Souls 3 is a powerful journey and the sequel the series truly deserves.”
