Splash Damage Announcing Games for “Completely New” Platforms in 2012

January 24, 2012 by Josh Harmon

Brink dev promises 2012 will be "the most significant year" in the company’s history.

Splash Damage CEO Paul Wedgwood has said that 2012 will be a "very special year" for the developer, as they gear up to announce new titles on several platforms, including those that are new to the studio.

In a statement on the company's official blog, Wedgwood offers a brief tease of what's in store, including the revelation that at least one unannounced game will see the developer breaking new ground.

"We've got several significant announcements to make in the coming weeks and months. We've hired some amazing new talent, strengthening our team in key areas. We'll be revealing new titles – both on platforms we've previously visited (including the PC and the world's leading consoles), as well as exploring spaces completely new to us."

Splash Damage, who most recently worked on the disappointing Brink, have experience developing for the PC, 360, and PlayStation 3. Given the timing of the announcement, it's unlikely that Wedgwood is referring to projects destined for the Sony or Microsoft's next generation hardware. The more plausible explanation is that one or more of the company's unannounced games is heading for a Nitnendo console, the PlayStation Vita, or iOS devices.

In an earlier segment of the post, Wedgwood discusses the important changes the industry has seen over the last decade, drawing special attention to digital distribution, smartphones and tablets, and free-to-play games. Are these merely observations or clues as to where Splash Damage might be headed? Your guess is as good as our, but by the sound of things, we won't have to wait too long to find out.
