Nintendo President Says Sustaining Switch Sale Momentum Will Be Difficult

The Nintendo company has thrived for decades, and their latest console release has been a much-needed success after their Nintendo Wii U failure. However, we’re going into the Nintendo Switch’s seventh year, so sales are starting to dwindle. Initially, the Nintendo company thought they could move fifteen million units this fiscal year. Now the Nintendo president is backtracking and finding that their initial predictions will be a stretch.

In a new Bloomberg post, we’re finding out some new details for Nintendo after their latest earnings report. The goal for Nintendo is not just to put a Nintendo Switch unit in every home but multiple Nintendo Switch units in each home. They would like to see every household member have a Nintendo Switch, but so far, their numbers across the board seem to be a bit down. Their goal of reaching fifteen million units sold this fiscal year might be missed, but Nintendo has expressed its interest in going forward and trying its best as we reach the holiday season.

Unfortunately for Nintendo, there are likely a few reasons why this is going to be a stretch. The obvious one is that the Nintendo Switch is becoming quite dated, with the hardware going into its seventh year. Likewise, big competitors now have an easier time moving their console platform units in the marketplace. Finally, we’re over the pandemic phase where consumers had difficulty finding a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S platform readily available in stock.

Sustaining the Switch’s sales momentum will be difficult in its seventh year. Our goal of selling 15 million unit this fiscal year is a bit of stretch. But we will do our best to bolster demand going into the holiday season so that we can achieve the goal.

We also can’t forget that we’re not seeing too many more heavy-hitting video game releases from Nintendo. One of the last major titles fans will likely pick up this year is The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. But after that, the expectation is that Nintendo will be gearing up to bring out the Nintendo Switch successor. In fact, we might not even see a Nintendo Direct during June of this year. That’s a major month for the video game industry to highlight what’s coming out this holiday season and prepare for what to expect in the following year.

So it could very well be that we might see Nintendo quiet down a bit as they prepare for the official announcement of the next console hardware release. With that said, nothing has been unveiled quite yet regarding what the next console platform from Nintendo will entail or if they will keep with the same portable hybrid design.
