The Last of Us Showrunner Doesn’t Have A Problem Killing Off Characters For Season 2

April 11, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

Get ready for an emotional rollercoaster.

Warning: The Last of Us Part 2 / Season 2 Spoilers

The Last of Us blew up immensely when it was first released, and recently it had a new resurgence. Thanks to the hit HBO series live-action adaptation, fans are falling in love with the cinematic storyline and characters all over again. But fans that enjoyed the video games know the next installment is going to have some big moments right out of the gate. For those of you who are already dreading the worst and hopeful that this upcoming season might hold some punches, the showrunner has already stated that they have no problem killing off characters.

Actor Pedro Pascal is thriving in his career with the hit Disney live-action series The Mandalorian and now HBO’s live-action adaptation of The Last of Us, fans are enjoying his work. But that might come to an end for The Last of Us. If you played through the second installment of The Last of Us, then you know that Joel meets his demise rather early into the narrative. It’s a gory and emotional scene, so fans best prepare to see this play out, as it doesn’t look like there’s any hesitation about killing anyone off.

In a recent interview with Esquire, Craig Mazin, the showrunner for The Last of Us, noted that it should be fairly obvious to anyone by now, but he doesn’t fear killing characters. However, he goes on to state that he doesn’t feel constrained by the source material. Meanwhile, Pedro Pascal noted to the publication that it wouldn’t make sense to follow the first game faithfully only for the adaptation to stray severely from the path.

This should be fairly obvious to anyone by now, but I don’t fear killing characters. But the important thing to note is that neither Neil [Druckmann, who co-created and exec-produces the series with Mazin] nor I feel constrained by the source material.

It’s clear that fans have taken up with the actor and the emotional journey Joe’s character goes through. Likewise, we know that the second installment of the video game franchise has had a bit of mixed reception from fans. So it should be interesting to see if any slight new takes or storylines are featured in the upcoming season. At any rate, we already know that the second game is far too large for the series to adapt into one season, so we might see at least a couple of seasons released to cover the storyline of the second game. Of course, we don’t have any clue just when we’ll be getting the next season of the show at this point.
