If you can recall back in 2014, composer Marty O’Donnell alerted the world through his Twitter account that he was let go from Bungie. After fourteen long years, the relationship between Marty O’Donnell and game development studio Bungie came to an end abruptly to Marty, in which, we’re finally getting his half of the story today thanks to an IGN interview.
Marty O’Donnell has been with Bungie over the years as they created the immensely popular Halo franchise. However, as the development team began to work on Destiny, friction started to occur between Marty O’Donnell and the other heads at Bungie. According to Marty, it became clear that there was a division between himself and the other leaders at Bungie when it came to different creative and business decisions for Destiny.
Within the IGN interview, Marty discussed how there were frustrations between the different decisions being made at Bungie and every attempt to bridge that gap between him and the other leaders at the studio failed. Although, while his position at Bungie seemed to be insecure, it came as a massive surprise when he was given the official let go from the studio.
At this point, he still is unsure as to why his position after fourteen years was just taken away, but he was given his just rewards. Marty O’Donnell successfully sued Bungie over firing him without cause which granted Marty with over a hundred thousand dollars along with his shares for Bungie.
As it stands right now, Marty O’Donnell along with other former Bungie developers have started their own studio called Highwire Games where their first production is an upcoming PlayStation VR exclusive title called Golem.
