Metal Gear Rising: Revengence First Playable at E3 2012

January 18, 2012 by Josh Harmon

Hopefully we’ll still see an egregious amount of watermelon-slicing.

In the latest issue of Famitsu, Hideo Kojima revealed that the newly rebooted Metal Gear Rising: Revengence will make its playable debut at this year's E3. The announcement came during the magazine's roundtable interview with Kojima and Tatsuya Minami, CEO of Platinum Games.

Metal Gear Rising was originally in development at Kojima Productions for several years before design difficulties caused the project to be quietly cancelled in late 2010. Kojima then began to look for an outside developer to finish the project, before ultimately settling on Platinum Games, whose previous work on Bayonetta and Vanquish made them a good fit for the more action-oriented Rising.

This latest interview, translated by Andriasang, sheds new light on exactly when and how that transition occurred. Apparently, the first time Kojima approached Platinum, they assumed it was a joke and shrugged it off. It wasn't until a year later, when Kojima and Minami spoke at the January 2011 press conference where Sony unveiled the Vita (or the NGP, as it was called at the time) that the collaboration began in earnest.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengence is slated for release on the 360 and PS3 sometime this year.
