Ubisoft Is Turning VR Into A Social Experience With Werewolves Within

March 15, 2016 by Holly Green

This virtual reality based Whodunit? game is full of werewolves and intrigue.

Ubisoft studio Red Storm Entertainment in collaboration with Ubisoft Barcelona have today announced an upcoming game that will turn virtual reality into a social experience.

While on the merit of its sensory depriving headgear virtual reality is generally considered a solo activity, with this title Ubisoft aims to make it a group experience. Werewolves Within, set in the medieval Gallowstown, will play out a lot like a murder mystery game, where one of the 5 to 8 players will be designated as the “werewolf”, and the others will be tasked with figuring out who is the beast in disguise. The roles of each player are randomly assigned and change with each fast-paced round, and games can be built either privately with your own roster of friends, or using the Quick Match system to find other players.

Ubisoft also promises that the VR tracking response to the player’s body language and voice inflections will come through in the character animations, giving a more personal feel to the experience.

Werewolves Within will debut on “all” major virtual reality platforms this upcoming fall of 2016. A trailer can be seen above and a gallery of screenshots is available below. In other virtual reality news, today Sony announced at a private press event at the Games Developer Conference both the price and release date of the upcoming PlayStation VR, which will debut this upcoming October for $399, pricing it well below competitors Oculus Rift and HTV Vive.  Among the games to support PlayStation VR at launch will be a VR version of Star Wars: Battlefront, exclusively on the PlayStation 4.
