PlayStation VR Costs Less Than Oculus Rift – Here’s When You Can Get It

March 15, 2016 by Ian Miles Cheong

Sony has revealed the release details for the PlayStation VR.

PlayStation
Sony’s PlayStation VR will launch this October for $400. Formerly known as Project Morpheus, the headset will be in consumers’ hands before the end of the year.

The studio announced today in a private session to journalists at the 2016 Game Developer Conference in San Francisco, CA that its upcoming virtual reality headset will cost exactly $399 and will be available to the public in October 2016.

The price of the unit costs significantly less than its competitors, the Oculus Rift ($599) and HTC Vive ($799). Both these headsets require a powerful PC to run. In contrast, the PlayStation VR only needs a PlayStation 4.

Sony revealed the specifications for its headset, which you can see below:

Display: OLED
Screen size: 5.7”
Resolution: 1920 x RGB x 1080 (960 x RGB x 1080 per eye)
Refresh rate: 120Hz, 90Hz
Sensors: 360 degree tracking / 9 LEDs
Field of View: Approximately 100 degrees
Latency: Less than 18ms
Controller: Dualshock 4 and PS Move

Sony says that the consumer version of the headset will feature the same technical specs as the developer version, and will be capable of running games at up to 120 frames per second. 50 games will be released between its October launch and the end of the year.

Among the games to support PlayStation VR at launch will be a VR version of Star Wars: Battlefront exclusive to the PS4.

The big question now is whether the PS4 will be able to power any of these games at their full framerate. Here’s a gallery of the items you’ll get along with the headset.
