Frozenbyte Is the Latest Game Dev to Come Out Against SOPA

January 13, 2012 by Josh Harmon

The Trine developer has released a video explaining why they oppose the controversial bill.

Ever since Riot Games came out against the controversial anti-piracy bill SOPA, mixing games and politics has become the hip thing to do. Red 5 announced they'd be skipping E3 in protest, Notch questioned supporters' sanity, and Sega… told us we should restart our computers. Hey, they can't all be winners.

Now, Frozenbyte, the small Finnish studio behind the Trine and Shadowgrounds series, has posted a video outlining their opposition to the bill. Through shots of employees holding notecards (including a man with the best pirate face I've ever seen), the company explains that, while they oppose piracy, they support giving consumers the right to make that choice.

It's a surprisingly philosophical position for a content creator to take, in sharp contrast to the practical critiques we've seen from other game companies. Frozenbyte's stance is definitely an admirable one, and regardless of whether you agree with their reasoning, their core message should resonate: if you oppose SOPA, make your voice heard before it's too late.
