Sonic Frontiers Director Says Future Games Could Take Inspiration From Previous Installments

January 24, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

Sonic Frontiers is the start of the third generation of Sonic games.

Sonic the Hedgehog is quite the iconic video game character. For years this little blue critter has been featured in a massive range of games and continues to thrive today. In fact, there’s been a bit more of a resurgence lately for the franchise with the likes of films, animated series, and, of course, games. But if you’re solely worried that the future games for the franchise will stay with the design of Sonic Frontiers, it looks like you can rest easy. The future of this beloved franchise will still look back and bring out games similar to the previous Sonic game generations.

Recently, the director for Sonic Frontiers has taken to Twitter in regard to the franchise. Morio Kishimoto has been with Sonic Team for years and has helped design games like Sonic and the Secret Rings and, as mentioned, being the director behind the most recent video game installment. With Sonic Frontiers having a strong fan base, there are still some players that might feel the future of Sonic games will only focus on this new design setup. But that’s not going to be the case. Morio Kishimoto took to Twitter and stated that Sonic Frontiers was the start of the third generation of Sonic the Hedgehog games. Meanwhile, the second generation likely is that of 3D Sonic titles such as the Sonic Adventure series.

Within the same tweet, Morio noted that not all future Sonic games would fit that third-generation format. Instead, we can still expect games to fit the bill for first and second-generation Sonic games. Likewise, just because we’re hitting the third generation of Sonic games with Sonic Frontiers, Morio wanted to note that he doesn’t believe the first and second generations are inferior. This is likely more than welcomed news to fans of the more old-school style of Sonic the Hedgehog games.

We’re not entirely sure just what the future holds for this franchise. Sonic Frontiers had a strong fan reception, so we’ll likely still see the developers pursue another installment with that open-world format. But again, with such a long history of games and fans, we’re sure that Sonic will continue to thrive in a wide variety of games, both with its latest modern take to the early side-scrolling setup that the franchise got its start with.
