Mass Effect Veteran Mac Walters Leaves BioWare

January 23, 2023 by Odhran Johnson

Mac Walters, one of the key figureheads behind BioWare’s acclaimed Mass Effect series has announced that he has left BioWare. Walters, who spent 19 years at the RPG studio juggernaut took to LinkedIn to announce publically his departure from the studio.

With a new year comes new adventures.

As some of you already know, at the end of last year I decided to leave BioWare. These past 19 years have been a life-changing experience to say the least, and it made the choice to go very difficult. I’ve worked with so many wonderful people and had the privilege to be a part of the most amazing teams and projects. It’s hard to fathom it all, and I know I’ll be reflecting on it for years to come.

Thank you to everyone I’ve had the joy of working with, and I wish everyone at BioWare the very best in everything you do. It’s truly been a pleasure.

Mac Walters – Former Production Director at BioWare

While Walters is best known for his work on the Mass Effect series he first started his BioWare career working on Jade Empire before taking a more senior role on the original Mass Effect. Up until his departure Walters had been working on the latest entry of the Dragon Age series, Dragon Age Dreadwolf as Production Director.

Alongside this, Walters was also the Narrative Director on BioWare’s Anthem as well as the Creative Director of Mass Effect Andromeda. More recently he worked as Project Director on the Mass Effect Legendary Edition and even wrote a number of Mass Effect‘s tie-in graphics novels which help to expand the Mass Effect universe.

Mac Walters isn’t the first BioWare veteran to depart from the company in recent years as Casey Hudson and Mike Darrah also departed from the studio not too long ago. BioWare is currently hard at work on both the new Dragon Age title Dragon Age Dreadwolf and the next installment in the Mass Effect series led by Mike Gamble. Whether Walters’ departure will have an effect on the upcoming Dragon Age game is yet to be seen but needless to say, this is a big departure from BioWare.

The Mass Effect series is one that’s still being talked about today and fans are still finding new easter eggs that would have otherwise been lost to the void. Most recently a fan discovered the similarities between Mass Effect’s opening and Top Gun.
