Overwatch 2’s Next Two Heroes Will Be Supports

January 19, 2023 by Odhran Johnson

Ask anyone who plays Overwatch and they’ll tell you that the most neglected role by far are the supports. While Kiriko was a nice addition to the game’s roster with the launch of Overwatch 2 the amount of choice the role offers is still extremely limited. This doesn’t seem to be just the fan’s opinion however as Overwatch 2‘s game director Aaron Keller was recently interviewed by NME and noted the lack of character diversity in the support class. The interview itself focused a lot on finding the perfect balance of play in the game but Keller did note that “the next two heroes we’re [Blizzard] going to release are support heroes.”

In the interview with NME Keller noted that Blizzard’s current plans are to continue fleshing out the Overwatch 2 support roster. He noted that the role has “the least amount of choice” when compared to the tank and damage classes.

We’re really focusing on supports right now – the next two heroes we’re going to release are support heroes… they bring some things to the game that we haven’t seen before – some new mechanics and really exciting ways of interacting with your own team.

Alongside Blizzard’s plans to introduce more support heroes, Keller noted that he was excited at the prospect of bringing more heroes and “a lot” more maps to Overwatch 2 in 2023. During the interview, the balancing system surrounding Overwatch 2‘s continuous buffs and nerfs to different characters came up. The conversation primarily focused on Roadhog who has been terrorizing players since the most recent patch of the game. Keller noted that his overperformance was down to other heroes being changed and allowing Roadhog to “move into the place that he’s at right now.”

It would be very easy for us to change him so much that he becomes unplayable, or nerfed so hard that people would think he was a throw pick… We’d like to avoid that, so we’re trying to be careful here but at the same time, we want to make our change meaningful enough to actually have a real impact on him and the game.

Players may not see a change in Roadhog for a little while but the prospect of two new support characters is certainly intriguing and will hopefully help balance out the role imbalance in Overwatch 2 at the moment.

Overwatch 2 is currently available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
