Eiji Aonuma has shared a small update on the state of Zelda Wii U.

In an interview with Famitsu, Aonuma stated that he had been busy lately, but progress had been going well. Aonuma personally had to handle the endgame dialogue for Zelda Wii U, just like he did for Skyward Sword. He also definitely stated that the game had taken shape, suggesting most of the work required to build its open world is done.

Aonuma also shared one new tidbit about the game, how the keyword for Zelda Wii U is ‘something new. Aonuma explained that all The Legend of Zelda 3D games until now took ideas or were based on Ocarina of Time. Ocarina of Time was itself a huge leap forward for the franchise, but Zelda Wii U will be a break from that tradition. Sakurai uses interesting words to describe the change as well; he says it’s like moving from Japanese food to Western style food.

Once again, this seems to be a reiteration of early previews stating that Zelda Wii U  would be an open world game, in the same vein as medieval and fantasy themed open world RPGs, like The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt or Dragon Age. Nintendo also promised in earlier previews that Link would be facing an entirely new formidable enemy. And yet, Aonuma may be hinting at changes that have not even been hinted at yet, and we won’t be learning about until its actual release.

Zelda Wii U is planned for release exclusively on the Wii U in 2016. Who do you hope it will be different from The Legend of Zelda games before it? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
