Oculus Rift Creator Says Mac Computers Aren’t Good Enough For The Hardware

March 4, 2016 by Patrick Lindsey

Oculus Rift creator makes his views on Apple computer hardware known.

Everyone knows the mudslinging can get downright fierce when it comes to hardware wars. But typically the jabs are limited to console-pounding fanboys or PC Master Race enthusiasts who should probably like, read a book or something. But Palmer Luckey, better known as the creator of the Oculus Rift, has just taken his turn at firing off a barrage of vitriol, this time targeting everyone’s favorite iCompany, Apple.

As ShackNews reported, Luckey recently spoke at an Xbox press event to discuss the future of his groundbreaking VR headset. Despite the fact that the event was ostensibly meant to be Xbox-oriented, ShackNews apparently found the opportunity to ask about future plans for Apple support for the Oculus Rift too tempting to pass up – but the response may not have been what was expected.

When asked about plans to include Apple support for his VR device, Luckey responded, “That is up to Apple. If they ever release a good computer, we will do it.”

Before you immediately run out to the pharmacy to pick up some burn cream, Luckey went on to further clarify his statement, saying:

“It just boils down to the fact that Apple doesn’t prioritize high-end GPUs. You can buy a $6,000 Mac Pro with the top of the line AMD FirePro D700, and it still doesn’t match our recommended specs. So if they prioritize higher-end GPUs like they used to for a while back in the day, we’d love to support Mac. But right now, there’s just not a single machine out there that supports it.”
