Get Some Retro Revenge With Dead Island: Definitive Edition, Coming Out This May

March 3, 2016 by Holly Green

Not only is the re-release of the first two Dead Islands still happening, so is a stand alone 16 bit retro game.

Last month a classification board filing for something called “Dead Island: Retro Revenge” surfaced in Australia, prompting speculation about the fate of the upcoming Dead Island: Definitive Edition. Today an announcement from Deep Silver confirms the existence of Dead Island: Definitive Edition, which includes a stand-alone 16 bit old school style game called, you guessed it, Dead Island: Retro Revenge.

Revealed initially through a Best Buy listing, the bundle will package both Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide onto one disc. You can see the announcement trailer above, along with a gallery of screenshots below. So far the listed features do not detail anything new or different from the original two games, but it is coming to both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on May 31, 2016.

As we’ve previously discussed at Gameranx, the state of Dead Island‘s true sequel Dead Island 2 is currently unknown. While the game was announced as in the works with Yager Development in 2014, the studio was taken off the project in July of 2015 and no word has since emerged regarding the game’s fate. The series’ original developers Techland have since moved on to Dying Light, a surprise hit zombie game that incorporates parkour as the primary element of gameplay. Could this re-release of the original games be Deep Silver gauging the remaining interest for the sequel? Or is it to satiate our Dead Island hunger pangs while they figure out what to do next? Who’s the new developer? Does Dead Island 2 even have one? Find out on the next Dragonball Z.
