Metagame: Creating Some Friendships, Ruining Others

December 20, 2011 by Elizabeth DeLoria

There are very few good things I’m good at doing. They include eating brownies, embarrassing my younger siblings in public and yelling at my friends about video games.

There are very few good things I’m good at doing. They include eating brownies, embarrassing my younger siblings in public and yelling at my friends about video games.

If you enjoy the latter of those activities, you might enjoy Metagame. Metagame is an experimental card game by the guys over at Local 12. The game was designed to create discussion about video games, although if you end up beating your friends because they disagree that Sonic is sexier than Asteroid, that’s okay, too.

There are two kinds of cards in Metagame – ‘Game Cards’ which feature various video game titles, and ‘Comparison Cards,’ which ask questions such as “Which game gives the player more freedom?” And “Which should be required in school?” Local 12 have sold out of the video game decks, but say that they’ll be back in stock again soon. You can sign up for their mailing list in the meantime to stay in the know.

The really fun thing about this game is how flexible it is. Metagame includes some different ways to play with the deck, but you’re just as welcome to make up your own rules, should you be seeking for a competitive game or just looking for a neat ice breaker at parties. Hell, this even sounds like a nifty way to get people talking during a speed dating night if you’re into that sort of thing.

Metagame seems like either the best conversation starter or the worst way to ruin friendships since Mario Party, I’m not exactly sure.
