Valve Running Half Life 3 ARG Possibly, Maybe, Not Likely

December 13, 2011 by Elizabeth DeLoria

Could Valve be teasing us with a possible Half Life 3 ARG? Probably not! But the theory itself is pretty interesting.

Could Valve be teasing us with a possible Half Life 3 ARG? Probably not! But the theory itself is pretty interesting.

A lot of Half Life fans are pretty desperate for something, anything that could possibly hint at Half Life 3. So when this video of Portal 2’s Wheatley at the VMAs was broadcast, they were quick to try and decipher what they could.

According to Vivid Gamer, hints you can spot in the video include:

  • A series of Cyrillic symbols (СПУТНИК НАБЛЮДЕНИЯ <<ЛАНТАНУМ>>) can be seen above Wheatley. Translated, the message reads: Observation Satellite “Lanthanum”. Lanthanum is a periodic element in Group 3.
  • Translated to Greek, “Lanthanum” reads λανθανω. Note the lambda symbol, a gaming icon that screams Half-Life.
  • Numerous constellations can be drawn in the stars behind Wheatley, all forming lambda symbols.
  • Wheatley finishes his speech by attempting to give coordinates of his location in space. He only has time to say “1, 1, 1″ before being cut off. 1 + 1 + 1 = 3
  • The atomic number of Lanthanum is 57. 5 and 7 are the starting and ending dates in July for next years E3. 5 + 7 = 12. 6/5/12 – 6/7/12.
  • Images of what appear to be a Headcrab can be captured within the video’s final second.

There was an extra little gleam of hope there from a Rattman twitter account, however, it later turned out to be a fake, unfortunately. Lucky, too, because Rattman is nightmare fuel as far as I’m concerned and his tweets creep me way out.

ValveARG soon posted an email response from Gabe Newell himself, saying that, nope, Valve isn’t running an ARG. Those who really want Half Life 3 are holding out, however, speculating that maybe Valve has enlisted a promotional company or something to run the ARG for them.

That Valve employee with the Half Life 3 t-shirt has a lot to awnser for.
