Epic Games’ New Title Will be “something radically different”

December 7, 2011 by Lyle Smith

The President weighs in.

Epic Games’ new title will be revealed this Saturday on Spike TV's GLAMOROUS VGAs. No one really knows what type of game it will be, but in a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, we now know what it is not: a Gears of War clone.

Mike Capps, President of Epic Games’, stated that “It’s something radically different for us."

“We love Gears, it was a great trilogy, we’ve gotten a lot of great compliments and a lot of great fans, and we’re still supporting Gears 3 very strongly, but I’ve got guys that have been on it since 2001, and some of them need a break and to try something new.”

Capps insisted that they will go back to that genre at some point in the future, but for now, they are focusing on their new title.

Capps also expressed some concern on how the new title will be received by gamers: will they think it's just more of the same, or that's it's a little too different?

“I’m so scared that people will just say, ‘oh yeah, that looks like an Epic game, oh sure,’ because I want them to see it as a departure,” he continued. “But I don’t want anyone to say, ‘that doesn’t look anything like an Epic game, forget it, I’m not interested’. So we’re actually nervous, we haven’t been nervous like this for a while!”

Knowing gamers, though, there will undoubtedly be A LOT complainers in both categories. There's no getting around that.

I haven't played too many Epic games over the past several years, but I am always curious when developers go a different route from what they are comfortable with.
