Kinect Modder Makes Motion Controlled Skyrim a Reality

December 6, 2011 by Josh Harmon

If you’re anything like me, you’ve been shouting “Fus Ro Dah” at your computer a lot lately. With this mod, it would actually do something.

Skyrim's plenty immersive on its own, but one modder has taken that to a whole new level by integrating Kinect motion and voice controls.

As you might expect, the mod allows you to swing your sword by flailing your arm, cast spells by lifting your hand, and even aim a bow semi-realistically. Movement and turning seem to be handled by adjusting your leg position and angling your body, while a robust set of voice commands help with nearly everything else. As you can see, he's able to access the map, navigate menus, equip items, and, of course, utilize your dragon shouts by issuing the proper commands. All together, now: Fus Ro Dah!

Given that Skyrim wasn't designed with motion control in mind, the mod seems a bit on the clumsy and inconvenient side, but it's a fantastic proof of concept and more fodder for the growing mountain of evidence that Kinect modders are more creative than I'll ever be.

Sadly, it doesn't look like this particular mod will be getting a public release anytime soon, so your Dragonborn LARPing will have to stay fruitless for the time being.
