Three guys Recreated the First Level of ‘Super Mario Land’ Using 18 Million Minecraft Blocks

December 6, 2011 by Lyle Smith

Well, this is certainly something.

Too much time on their hands is taken to a new level.

Three guys (James Wright, Joe Ciappa and a someone known as Tempusmori) spent over 500 hours to recreate level of a 22 year old Game Boy game, Super Mario Land, using more than 18 million Minecraft blocks. The creators of the huge project used a Game Boy emulator to view the first-level and then replicated it pixel-by-pixel inside a giant Minecraft Game Boy.

Apparently, the three spent four weeks straight working six to seven hours a day (jesus christ) to create the shots. They then dropped their shots  into a video editor and recorded each frame for a sixth of a second, equalling out to two minutes and twenty seconds of gameplay.

While I poke fun at this … uh … accomplishment, it is an insane amount of dedication and I guess if something is worth doing, it's worth OVER doing. Right?

Have a look at the "making of" video:
