Todd Howard Comments on More Bethesda Mobile Games

February 19, 2016 by Dennis Patrick

Todd Howard talks about Bethesda’s Fallout Shelter success and their strive to develop new mobile titles.

Fallout Shelter
Last year, during Bethesda’s E3 briefing, we were not only introduced to their upcoming console and PC video game titles but the surprising introduction of their first mobile video game called Fallout Shelter. During the event, Todd Howard, director and executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios, spoke of their interest in the mobile gaming platform and from it, they developed Fallout Shelter, a free-to-play game based within their Fallout universe. Now, during the DICE Summit, Todd Howard spoke to GameSpot about their current standings with mobile game development and their thought process when first developing Fallout Shelter.

Todd mentioned the surprise developers had when their initial mobile video game Fallout Shelter, became a massive hit. Overall, the goal with the video game was to bring out an engaging experience that had a bit more gameplay to it than anything else like it on the market. After Fallout Shelter’s announcement during E3 2015, gamers on the Apple iOS platform was treated to the game’s release that evening in which the game blew up granting it as one of the more popular video game titles on the Apple App Store.

Mostly we were concerned with it being appropriate for who we are [as Bethesda Game Studios]–meaning it’s got a bit more meat on the bone than other things like it, But its overall popularity? We were not ready for that, which is a good problem.

Because of the amount of success their first mobile app received, gamers are going to see more mobile titles release under Bethesda, something we were alerted to before after the company opened up a new studio this past December to help develop new games for both console and mobile platforms.

This new studio was opened up in Montreal, Quebec and as mentioned, the developers staffed would be used to expand their development in console, PC, and mobile gaming. Unfortunately, Todd Howard wasn’t spilling anything about what’s to come within their mobile platform development or if they would be attached to any already existing IPs, but we were treated to news earlier today that Bethesda is currently in the process of developing three new video games which will be revealed at a later date.
