A Guide to Diablo III’s Jeweler

November 29, 2011 by Josh Harmon

Diablo III’s Jeweller isn’t in the beta, but he’ll play a huge role in the final game. Here’s how he’ll work.

While the Diablo III beta gives all the attention to the Blacksmith, it's important to remember that there are two more artisans who'll accompany you on your adventure, the Jeweler and the Mystic. There's still a lot of information to be discovered about both merchants, but we've managed to cobble together what we've learned so far about the Jeweler into a comprehensive guide.

Like the other artisans, Diablo III's jeweler won't just be a generic merchant. He'll have a name (Covetous Shen) and related quests, and he'll even follow you from act to act, always appearing in the caravan area. You'll be able to train him to increase his level and unlock new recipes, though you'll also be able to bring him any recipes you find as drops. In addition to acting as a merchant, he'll offer a few special services to the player.

First, and perhaps most importantly, he'll be able to combine three identical gems into a single gem of higher level. There are a total of 14 gem levels in Diablo III, meaning that it takes a whopping 1,594,232 chipped gems to craft a Radiant Star variant. In other words, you'd best get to hording those gems. (Of course, there's always the chance that Blizzard will reduce the ratio for higher level gems to 2:1, as they did with Diablo II's runes.) Some sites are reporting that the Jeweller will level gems at no cost, but there's at least one screenshot of the interface floating around that says it'll cost 2,000 gold. We'll have to wait and see what the official word from Blizzard is.

Secondly, he'll be able to remove a gem from a socketed item. It'll cost you some gold, but it's a valuable asset if you're particularly attached to an item or gem and don't want to go through the trouble of acquiring and entirely new one.

Finally, he'll be able to add sockets to items. You'll have to pay for this service as well. It's not yet clear whether he'll be able to add more than one socket to an item at a higher level, or whether he'll be able to add sockets to items that already have them. According to the files in the beta, most high level items carry between two and three sockets, though some special helms, shields, and weapons appear to have four.

Here's how the interfaces for all three of the Jeweller's services will look:

Blizzard's online game guide provides a look at all the gems in the game, along with the bonuses they'll unlock once they're socketed into items. Currently, there are four gem types, each with 14 levels, and two distinct stat boosts, one for helms and one for other gear. Here's what we know so far:
