Indie developers Jumpship has finally revealed a launch date for its highly-anticipated sci-fi adventure Somerville. The otherworldly original IP will be released on November 15, according to a new, albeit brief reveal trailer.
The title’s launch announcement came somewhat out of the blue today, given that there’s not been much news on Somerville since it was first revealed way back in 2017. The last known update on the state of the game came almost a year ago when a fourth trailer for the post-apocalyptic title was released. So today’s news of the actual and fairly imminent release of Somerville will come as a pleasant surprise for those eager to jump into the world-ending action and adventure. It was also revealed that the game will also be launching on day one on Xbox Game Pass, which will come as exciting news for those subscribed to the service. Somerville comes from the mind of Jumpship director Chris Olsen and has been created in collaboration with the ex-Playdead CEO and co-founder Dino Patt. It looks set to present players with an emotionally gripping narrative adventure, which takes place in the wake of a global conflict. With the world left in ruins after the events of an alien invasion, it’ll be down to players to explore what remains and attempt to rebuild from the ashes.
It sounds like there’ll be some emotional aspects of the player’s journey through Somerville to get to grips with as well. Jumpship has described the game as being “a hand-crafted narrative experience” which will encourage players to “explore a rich and atmospheric world, along with the intimate repercussions of large-scale conflict, on your way to making your family whole again.”
As expected after the end of the world as we know it, Somerville will require players to make their way across perilous terrain that’s been heavily transformed by the events of the major catastrophe. While not a huge amount else is known about the game itself as yet, it seems that mystery and intrigue are core components of everything Somerville is bringing to the table. Visually speaking, the title looks pretty slick and impressive, with an interesting art style that looks set to provide a new take on the post-apocalyptic sci-fi adventure genre. There’s not too much longer to wait to get stuck into the weird and wonderful-looking world of Somerville. The game will be coming to Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Store on November 15.
