Rumor: Next Kinect So Advanced It Can Read Lips

November 28, 2011 by Addison Langford

Rumor has it that the next Kinect will be so advanced that it will actually be able to read your lips as you speak.

Sometimes I wonder which industry has more rumors, the celebrity gossip industry or the video game industry. I’m sure it’s the celebrity gossip industry, but you get what I’m saying. The latest rumor bouncin’ around is that Microsoft has a new version of the Kinect in the works that will be much more advanced than the current version of the Kinect.

This rumor comes from Eurogamer’s unnamed source, so take all this with a grain of salt. Apparently this new Kinect will be so advanced that it will be able to read your lips. Not only will it be able to read your lips but it will also be able to tell when you’re angry, which way you’re facing. The new Kinect will also be ditching the USB interface for something much quicker. This new Kinect will then be able to stream a larger amount of data as well as use high resolution cameras.

“It can be cabled straight through on any number of technologies that just take phenomenally high res data straight to the main processor and straight to the main RAM and ask, what do you want to do with it?” Eurogamer’s source said. The source also mentioned that the new Kinect would come packaged with future Xbox consoles.

I imagine we will either be hearing about this at CES in January or at E3 this summer, assuming the rumor is legit. Are actual gamers actually into the Kinect? It seems from my experience that mostly the casual gamer or family are the ones picking up Kinect. I could be wrong, I’m not trying to say anything bad about anyone that owns one. I personally don’t understand what’s so great about motion controlled gaming, but I do however think the technology is pretty incredible.
