Silent Hill 2 Remake Won’t Feature Loading Screens

October 20, 2022 by Todd Black

Behold the power of next-gen systems!

To say that we’ve come a long way with video game technology is an understatement. Because we haven’t just come a long way, we’ve redefined what a video game is several times over. Don’t forget; we used to have video games in arcade cabinets. The first consoles had the most basic graphics, and online play didn’t happen for many years after video games became popular. Even today, we’re innovating in ways that push games forward, which is what will make Silent Hill 2 Remake fans happy. Because not only is the game getting a total overhaul from top to bottom in terms of story and gameplay, it’ll make sure you don’t lose a moment as you go through the story.

What do we mean by that? According to creative director and lead designer Mateusz Lenart, the PS5 is so powerful, and they built the game so well that there won’t be a single loading screen for you to endure. For those who played the original PS2 game, you’ll recall how that game was littered with loading screens. You’d be hit with a screen even if you just went from one room to the next. But now? Not so much:

“The superfast data streaming means players won’t see any loading screens as they seamlessly explore the entirety of the Silent Hill town.”

That’s a worthy change from the original, and it’ll also add intensity to the mix as you’ll have to run from enemies without having a “safety net” of a loading screen to save you. But that’s not the only change in the Silent Hill 2 Remake that fans should note. As shown in the trailer, the gameplay of the title will feature an over-the-shoulder camera, not unlike what is in many of the Resident Evil games, especially the remakes. That new perspective got the team to redefine the combat for players in the game. Plus, they’ve altered certain scenes and set pieces to utilize this camera better, thus allowing you always to see who James is fleeing from. The fixed cameras of the original games made that problematic.

One thing that has already gotten praise is the remake’s visuals. The jump from PS2 to PS5 is noticeable but goes beyond that. The game looks life-like in many aspects, and that’s due to the Unreal Engine 5. The game utilizes the engine and other technologies perfectly to bring a creepy aesthetic to the title, and the team loves what they have:

“Armed with these technologies, we hope to make Silent Hill 2 an even more harrowing and unforgettable experience for fans old and new.”

The game is currently still in development, but based on what we’ve seen, they’re quite a ways in. Hopefully, the finished product will reinvigorate the love for the series.
