Cyberpunk RPG Dex Is Coming To Consoles

February 11, 2016 by Carlos Chism

The game has had a long journey from Kickstarter campaign, through Steam, and now finally to consoles.

Dreadlocks studio announced today that their 2d side scrolling Cyberpunk RPG Dex is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PlayStation Vita. You can expect the game at some point during Q1 of 2016 on PS4 and Xbox One, with the PlayStation Vita version following at some point after that. The developer describes the game’s story as the “story of an AI, Dex, and her quest for Singularity, a theoretical “event horizon” in which artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence.” Dex is being chased by corporate mercs without much reason, and gets help from a trio of “hacktivists” along her journey.

The game boasts “multiple solutions to problems” by allowing players to work in cyberspace or in normal reality, using skills, weapons, and special equipment to overcome obstacles. There’s also options to customize your character and play style, so that you can lean more towards a straightforward shooter, depend more on hacking capabilities, or even become an expert in silent assassination. Those hacking capabilities also feature a “unique hacking mechanic” that allows you to “Transfer your consciousness to your avatar, overcome intrusion countermeasures, take action, and then return back to your body in a fraction of a real-time second to see the results – deactivated turrets, overloaded devices, enemies with crippled implants…”

The game was originally funded on Kickstarter in 2014, reaching a total amount funded of £30,647 (or $44, 276 USD) from about 2,000 backers. At the time, the game was only available for PC, Mac, and Linux, but it seems its subsequent release was successful enough to warrant a port to consoles. The game also received mixed critical reviews, with some reviewers saying that the story/setting were interesting and the gameplay completely bland. If you like Cyberpunk, 2D RPGs, or sidescrolling action, the game may well be worth checking out.
