Japanese MMO Deleted From Internet During Routine Maintenance

November 16, 2011 by Ian Miles Cheong

M2 is nuked from the internet thanks to a little mishap with the game’s database.

In the blink of an eye, an entire world was erased—from the internet, anyway. The Japanese/Korean MMO called M2 was accidentally wiped out during routine maintenance of the game’s database.

According to Kotaku, the game has been deleted forever, as the information stored on the database existed nowhere else—not even on a backup server.

M2 was developed by Japanese gaming studio Sankando, and was undergoing a bit of maintenance on October 21 when “integral code” was deleted. Erasing the data broke the entire game.

It’s doubtful if the mistake was anything but accidental, but angry players aren’t ruling out the possibility. That none of the data was stored on a back up server or anywhere else alone is evidence of a pretty sloppy operation.

Has no one learned from Project Zomboid’s mistake?
