Valve: Sony Great on Cross-Platform Games

November 8, 2011 by Mat Growcott

Valve have changed their tune over the past 18 months or so, praising Sony for getting on board with cross-platform play.

Portal 2 writer Chet Faliszek has taken the time to speak with Edge about cross-platform play between the PS3 and the PC, a feature utilized in both that game and in the upcoming Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

"With Sony – and we've done it with Portal 2 – they've been great to work with on that stuff; they're really open to that idea. They think of it kind of like we do: we're gamers, we don't think 'platform'.

"Like, I own all the platforms, and I'll play games on whatever. I just want to play. And they've been really helpful that way."

The ability to play against people on a different platform is pretty awesome and its something I'm sure we'd all like to see outside of Valve. Their knowledge of the Steam network obviously gives them the advantage, but would it be possible to play the next Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto on console with other people playing on their desktop computer?

It does, of course, raise an interesting question as to whether we controller-users will ever be able to keep up.

"[That's one] thing about the skill-based matchmaking: if you're really great with a controller, you'll be playing with people who are as good with their mouse and keyboard. It doesn't care about your input device."

And that's another load off my mind. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive launches early next year.
