PlayStation Network Update Reduces PSN Store Content Certification from Five to Two

November 4, 2011 by Ian Miles Cheong

An upcoming update for the PlayStation Network will reduce the number of certifiable devices capable of playing PSN-purchased content from five to two.

Greed has its limits, but not with Sony, apparently. A new update for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable—set for release on November 18—will set the maximum number of accounts that can have access to Playstation Network purchases to 2.

At present, both the PS3 and PSP allow up to five certified devices each, meaning customers who own as many as several gaming devices can use a single PlayStation Network account on which to play their games. After the November 18 update, that number will be reduced to 2 each.

Sony justifies the move by that it's intended to relieve the burden of the company's web-based account management system, which is currently offline. The company says that the change will be retroactively applied to all purchased game content on the PlayStation Network.

The move is presumably intended to encourage current PSP owners to pick up the PS Vita when it comes out and drive the PSP into obsolescence. Nice.
