17 Minute Hitman: Absolution Demo Gets Developer Commentary

November 3, 2011 by Josh Harmon

Relive Agent 47’s library escape, this time with the soothing Danish voices of two IO Interactive devs.

Last month, IO interactive released a gameplay video for Hitman: Absolution that clocked in at a whopping 16 minutes. Now, the developer has released an updated version of that same footage, this time enhanced with commentary from game director Tore Blystad and gameplay director Christian Elverdam.

As before, the demo takes place in an abandoned Chicago library, and sees Agent 47 attempting to evade and eliminate the police searching for him as part of a citywide manhunt.

A great deal of the commentary focuses on Absolution's new Instinct mode, which allows 47 to detect enemies through walls, view their patrol routes, and pick out objects in the environment you can interact with. According to the devs, the feature was designed to reduce the often frustrating trial and error gameplay so many stealth games falls victim to. Instinct mode won't turn the game into a cakewalk, though. Using the ability drains a meter, and the harder the difficulty level you choose to play on, the less you'll be able to rely on it as a crutch.

They also delve into the game's plot, the improved AI system, and the touchy subject of bringing more action-oriented gameplay to the franchise. It's definitely worth a watch, even if you saw the demo the last time around.

Hitman: Absolution launches sometime next year on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
