PlayStation Vita Won’t Have Flash Support at Launch

October 26, 2011 by Josh Harmon

The handheld’s browser will allegedly only support HTML 5 and Javascript 1.7, but Sony could patch in Flash support at a later date.

Famitsu is reporting that the PlayStation Vita's built-in web browser won't offer support for Adobe Flash at launch. The news comes as part of an unofficial Vita FAQ the Japanese gaming mag put together for its latest issue.

According to the article, the handheld will offer support for HTML 5, Javascript version 1.7, and cookies, making for a browsing experience that's in line with that of Apple's iOS devices. It's unclear exactly how Famitsu got their hands on this new information, as Sony's official stance on Flash support, per their own FAQ, is that the company is "evaluating the opportunity to offer non-gaming applications/content and will announce details at a later time."

The report also includes a few other unannounced details about the device, including the news that you'll be able to transfer PSP save files to the Vita from your computer or PS3, that PSP games will run on the Vita with bilinear filtering, and that the system won't support PSOne Classics right out of the gate. That last tidbit is in direct contradiction to SCEA's official statements, though it's possible the company intends to patch in support in the two month window between the Japanese and North American launch.

Sony's new handheld releases in Japan on December 17, with a European and North American launch following on February 22.
