Forza Horizon 2 is a truly brilliant game. How much do I like it? Put it this way: if I didn’t already have an Xbox One, I’d be buying one just so I could play it. Yep. To me, this is a killer app – and one of the greatest racing games yet seen.

Outside of that, I found Forza Horizon 2 to be stunning, and one of the best new-generation titles I’ve played this year, even outside of the racing genre. There’s so much content packed into this game that I could easily continue to play and see new things weeks after this review is posted. And the the world crafted by Playground Games is so fun to explore, I certainly wouldn’t mind doing just that. Even if you just have a passing interest in racing games, you really owe it to yourself to check out Forza Horizon 2.

Horizon even features a dynamic weather system that changes throughout the game to give it an additional layer of realism. A special mention should also be made to the rain effects… wow… I mean wow… it’s truly glorious, especially the reflection on the road and yes, it effects the gameplay. Lastly, you have the locations themselves that look like something out of a travel show focusing on southern Europe with its detailed cities, lush forest and sometimes tiny pebbled streets.

Forza Horizon 2 takes everything that made the original game great, includes it here without removing anything and then adds some new stuff to boot. The game plays smoothly, looks stunning, and has a soundtrack you’ll be humming for a while. Anyone who loved the first game will be right at home here, and those who didn’t, should at least download the demo. It gives you some races, a bucket list challenge, a few radio stations to flip through, cutscenes, minor tuning options, and even an event challenge. It’s the best demo available on the Xbox One and it’s exactly what a good demo should be – a free sample of everything that makes the full game worth owning.

My interests these days are primarily auto racing and flying sims on the PC. I’m too old and slow to do well at the FPS twitchers or fighting games, but I do enjoy online Rainbow 6 or the like now and then, although I had to give up Americas Army due to my complete inability to discern friend from foe. I have the Xbox mostly to play games with my daughter and for the sports games.

There is one thing that I think everyone is going to latch onto as a negative – the VIP Membership. Tucked behind a $19.99 paywall are six additional cars including the Lamborghini Urus and Tesla Model S. While it’s obvious these were held back as a very small carrot for DLC, there are 200 cars and more content in this game than any racer I’ve ever seen. If you want to pick up the new bucket lists (there is an empty slide just waiting for it), extra cars, and whatever goodies are coming this season, knock yourself out, but there is so much here without it.

Every element in Forza Horizon 2 adds up to an exceptional experience. The story isn’t over the top so as to get in the way of racing, driving feels as good as it ever did in Forza Motorsport, there’s a ton of things to do, and the game looks absolutely beautiful — especially the long-awaited dynamic weather system. Forza Horizon 2 is a must-have on the Xbox One.

There’s also not a lot to complain about. I’d suggest that maybe putting the camera button on RB was a mistake (LB would just work better), or that including the Ford Escort RS1800 instead of the RS2000 was a massive slight against me (it was the second car I ever owned, and I loved it), but so far that’s as far as any issues I’ve come across go. It’s an absolutely gorgeous game that handles better than anything else in the market. It caters to the truly hardcore and the average Sunday driver in equal measure without taking away from either. It has one of the best presentations of any game in-market right now and continually rewards players for the simple, little things. It has a huge social component alongside co-op and competitive multiplayer as well as the brilliant Drivatar system that emergently challenges you, even if you don’t have many friends to play with. The year’s not over yet, but this is the best game I’ve played in 2014 so far, and I’m not even a huge car person. Well, I wasn’t before.

Where it should be, of course. And Horizon 2 takes such pleasure in it all. There’s no great revolution here and it occasionally lacks for visual variety and challenge, but Horizon 2 earns its stripes with a breezy determination to simply show you a ruddy good time.

Forza Horizon 2 may not break new ground, but it excels at what it does due to a high level of polish and a laser focus on fun. Whether you want to play for five minutes or five hours, the game has something to offer. Who cares if the premise borders on the absurd? If you want to race, this is the game get.

Despite minor faults, it’s easy to love Forza Horizon 2. With many of the optional features the more serious Motorsport games are known for, along with Horizon’s high-octane thrills and massive open landscapes to explore, Forza Horizon 2 is a culmination of the best parts of both games, all in one package.

I’ve played a lot of Forza games in the last nine years; I was almost instantly comfortable falling into the seat of Forza Horizon 2. But it also revealed that the other drivers you race against start at one nominal difficulty level that never really changes as the game goes on. I never found a shift in the challenge presented by my opponents.
