The core story in Shadow of Mordor could feasibly be hurried through in a dozen or so hours, but the constantly evolving and escalating conflict within the Nemesis system and the huge number of side quests can easily double or triple that. In any case, the joy in Shadow of Mordor is not measured in hours played, but in the accumulated swords of defeated orc captains. Shadow of Mordor is a triumph, and even a slightly flat ending and some repetition cannot diminish the overall quality of the game.

There are some parts that are clearly not lore-friendly. The subject of Talion’s death and revival along with the elven wraith being the two most glaring things. For most others I will just say: go into it with an open mind. Some puzzle pieces will fit while others are forced to fit, and then there are some that don’t fit at all. This causes the main story, as previously mentioned, to shine in some parts and become heavily disjointed in others. The main story may not shine brightly, but the story that the player can forge for themselves is a remarkable experience.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor is a strong foray into the Tolkien universe, backed up by popular combat from other major action series, with its own free-running style to boot. The Nemisis system does keep things a little fresh even if after a while it’s illusion of orc and uruk society does start to break down. The fact these captains are going about their business just as we are helps it feel more chaotic. It is without a doubt the best experience set in Middle-Earth, but also stacks up against any action fantasy adventure, whether with a cape and cowl or haystack diving.

But Shadow of Mordor still looks stunning on lower settings, and even if you can’t experience the glory that is Ultra, you shouldn’t miss out on what’s undeniably the best Lord of the Rings-based game to date. Oh, and there’s a dwarf (though beardless). As a member of the Fellowship of the Beard, that always counts for something in my book.

While expectations may have been fairly low for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, there was still a certain amount of hope within me that Monolith could produce an enjoyable experience. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor soared past those expectations and not only produced an enjoyable experience, but also one of the best experiences with a video game this year. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is a very well crafted adventure that will keep you hooked for hours on end.

But… I don’t really want to leave it like that, because Shadow of Mordor is a tremendously polished game which occasionally hits moments of genuine greatness. It’s got better stealth than Assassin’s Creed, some fun lore points, entertainingly brutal combat, and a lot of really good ideas. (It’s also one of the finest PC ports in recent memory; seriously, the porting job here is really, really good.) It’s just that most of those ideas need a bit more work to actually form something spectacular, because as it stands, Shadow of Mordor feels a little bit… empty. It’s popcorn gaming: entertaining, but not even remotely filling. Fingers crossed for these ideas to coalesce better in a sequel or another title, basically.
