Some Vita Games May Require a Separate Memory Card for Save Games

October 21, 2011 by Josh Harmon

Not all games purchased on Vita’s card-based format will be able to save your game to internal memory.

As you might have heard, PS Vita games will be available through two different channels: digital downloads and physically on a proprietary cartridge. While it was self-evident that digitally purchased games would require external memory to store your save files, various Japanese news outlets are now reporting that even some cart releases will be requiring a separate memory card to hold your game data.

According to a story posted on Kotaku Japan, @field, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Dream Club Zero, Disgaea 3 Return, Hot Shots Golf 6, Monster Raider, and Ridge Racer are among the titles that will be unable to save to internal memory. Many other titles, including Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Dynasty Warriors Next, won't require a separate card, although it's far from clear exactly why and how the distinction will be made.

Last month, Sony announced the Japanese pricing plan for first party memory cards, which are considerably more expensive than comparable offerings in other formats.

Sony has not yet verified the story or the list of affected titles, but we'll keep you updated if and when they do.
