James Gunn Honors Anniversary Of First GOTG Film Release

August 2, 2022 by Todd Black

His life was changed that day.

Allow us to tell you a story. It’s about the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in Phase 2. It was in this phase that things were really starting to “build” if you will. The box office totals for many of its movies were growing, the kind of storytelling they were doing was building, and so on and so forth. It was also here that they took one of their biggest risks ever in the creation of a movie focused on a team even hardcore comics fans knew little about, the Guardians of the Galaxy. What’s more, it was going to be headed up by James Gunn, a director mostly known for a horror movie at the time.

Fan reactions were decidedly…underwhelmed, especially when the first “development art” came out and no one could really name the team outside of Rocket Raccoon (and that was because of a video game appearance he had made previously.)

But James Gunn had a plan, he told a high-concept story that was wrapped in fun, great actors, and of course, a killer soundtrack. From the MOMENT that the first trail hit the late-night airwaves, people wanted to see this movie, and not only did it do well, it blew expectations out of the water.

Yesterday was the 8-year anniversary of the release of Guardians of the Galaxy, and Gunn posted some BTS pictures of him making the movie and noted that the film “changed his life”. And it’s no stretch of the imagination to say that he was emphatically right about that. Not only did he get to make two more GOTG movies and an upcoming holiday special, but he would get to do The Suicide Squad, which led to the much-beloved Peacemaker series, and now he’s trying to dedicate more time to making TV shows.

He’s a busy man now, and a “bunch of A-Holes” were a key reason for that
