This will mark the first time Euroleague teams have appeared in the critically acclaimed NBA 2K series. Fourteen teams in total will be integrated as playable teams in NBA 2K14, allowing fans of European basketball to pit their local teams against the biggest teams from the NBA.

Like the superstar who graces its cover, NBA 2K14 features an undeniable sense of greatness. Its presentation is the best the sports genre has to offer, and the gameplay refinements improve an already stellar game. It’s a shame Visual Concepts didn’t put the same level of effort into improving the popular My Career or Association mode.

Once again the NBA 2K series delivers content for days. The Association is as deep a fantasy draft and head office simulator as ever, MyPlayer is a brilliant RPG dressed as a sports game and MyTeam is, well it’s still a FIFA Ultimate Team mirror mode without the execution. The way the game simulates basketball is better than it ever has been, and while a control scheme change already seems like a certainty for 2K15, after a little practice you’ll find you have almost all the control you had in previous games.

NBA 2K14 could have–should have?–been the defining hoops game of the generation. Instead of building on the remarkable experiences its predecessors offered, however, the overall impact has diminished even as the on-court gameplay has improved. While it still exudes personality, style, and class, some of its key areas are in need of fresh ideas. NBA 2K14 is great, yes, but somehow feels like a missed opportunity.
