As it stands, unless you’re a big Space Hulk or Warhammer 40k fan, I’d suggest keeping an eye on this one until it hits a nicely discounted price during a Steam Sale, and then snapping it up. At a discounted price, the lack of content wouldn’t stand out nearly as much – and in the meantime, it just opens up opportunities for the devs to smooth out whatever minor glitches the game currently is currently marred by.

it’s a game about power-armored warrior space monks fighting purple aliens in a ship with a casual skull-motif decor – and only really makes sense to those familiar with the setting, but it just works. The voice acting, while limited, is reminiscent of the original PC adaptation of the game from the early 90s, distorted and bellowing as it issues the Marine player their orders. You can also learn the game at your own pace by playing solo, albeit only as the Marines, unlocking each mission in turn as you progress through the classic 12-mission campaign from the rulebook.

But cosmetic complaints and presentation nit-picks aside, this is still a fun game for Space Hulk aficionados. The price of entry does feel steep at $30, but if you are an old-school fan, it’s just about worth it. It’s solid enough, and is still enjoyable – both as a one-player game, and particularly as an asynchronous multiplayer game. It’s just a shame that it feels like the developers stopped at “just about good enough†and didn’t spend the extra time layering in the kind of detail, polish and finesse that would have made this a complete package that you could really fall in love with.

The board game has been out of print since 2009, with copies selling for over £100, so this well-intentioned but scruffy recreation is the most affordable option for fans looking to relive the experience. That quirk of the market doesn’t excuse the fact that Space Hulk could have – and should have – been better than this.

No matter how rosy the spectacles, however, this is a good-enough version of a classic game rather than a great one. So we return to that humblebrag of a loading screen. This is the first Space Hulk videogame in 17 years. When you think about it like that, perhaps its makers should have spent a few more months polishing it and released a slightly better one.

Space Hulk is enjoyable enough for a brief while, and a faithful recreation of the board game, but its various blemishes, its lack of polish, and its somewhat repetitive gameplay hold it back considerably. It might be interesting to see what patches and expansions can achieve for the title, but at the moment it’s difficult to give it a ringing endorsemen.

Full Control have done a very faithful recreation of the board game, and with a few tweaks it could have been fairly decent. If they’d have dared to step outside of the restrictions of the original it could have been even better. It still is a fun game, but it is very rough around the edges. If you’re a 40K fan or someone looking for more turn based squad action, Space Hulk does deliver, just about. For anyone else, or those hoping for something a bit deeper, you probably want to look elsewhere.
