Tales of Xillia is the latest episode in the beloved Tales of series. The game follows Jude Mathis, a clever medical student attending school in the capital city, and Milla Maxwell, a mysterious woman accompanied by four unseen beings. Players will be able to choose either Jude or Milla at the outset of their adventure through the world of Rieze Maxia, where humans and spirits live together in harmony.

Because no, it isn’t. It is very much alive and well — albeit keeping a rather more low profile than in previous generations — and Tales of Xillia is a particularly strong example of why JRPGs still have a place in the modern gaming landscape. It’s an essential purchase for all JRPG enthusiasts, whether you’re a nakama fan like me or simply someone who enjoys solid, well-designed games; there’s something here for almost everyone to enjoy, assuming, as with any other RPG, you have the patience and/or time required to commit to it.

Tales Of Xillia is a brilliant title, and could just be the breakout game that really establishes the series in Western markets. There’s a great story here, with likable characters and voice acting that makes the characters feel real. The streamlined leveling, equipment choices and skill tree make Xillia one of the best RPGs I’ve played. In fact Tales Of Xillia may just be what the JRPG genre needed.

Combat is streamlined with the Dual-Raid Linear Motion Battle System, or DR-LMBS for short. Linked combat runs the show, and it’s quite the addition to an already successful combat experience. Linking Milla to Jude, or any other character on the field for that matter, only requires the D-Pad to link players together; players on the field have their stat bars aligned to match the D-Pad, so choosing a link partner is rather simple. Really, not linking with other characters can almost be suicidal, especially later in the game when enemies become powerhouses and very coordinated. Explore these links, and don’t get too comfortable with one character: one combination may work well against one grouping of enemies, but it may not work well against others; besides, finding out that a linked combination can equate to firing nukes wouldn’t even make Metal Gear Solid’s Otacon upset. The refined and polished combat system makes chaining combos that much more entertaining and, though not quite as challenging as it was in Graces f, grinding out levels and farming for materials has never been more engaging.

Though it hews closely to the traditional ratio of exploration and critter killing, Tales of Xillia has more than enough unusual and refreshing elements to keep pushing you forward. The story spins out new tendrils of information at just the right speed, so as soon as you think you know what’s going on, you discover that there’s more to the tale. The characters are people whose company you enjoy, rather than simply endure, and the fast-paced combat keeps you mentally engaged at all times. Tales of Xillia never forgets its mission, but it doesn’t neglect to enjoy the journey either.

Don’t let the game’s lengthy localization period deter you from experiencing the latest chapter in the Tales universe. Xillia’s likeable cast, frenetic combat, and enjoyable storyline make this one of the best entries in the franchise, though its emaciated side content leaves something to be desired. The promise of an imminent sequel with expansions to both the story and gameplay sweeten the pot considerably, however, and I can forgive its imperfections. Don’t be afraid to get spirited away by this action-packed adventure.

Although it’s no Final Fantasy X (which still remains the greatest of all time) Tales of Xillia is definitely a worthwhile purchase if you’re a fan of RPGs, and provides everything you’d expect from a story-driven game. Although the game was visually a bit of a let-down, it more than makes up for it by playing well, being genuinely engaging and hitting just the right note for originality. Certainly one of the better RPGs released in the last year or so.

Tales of Graces f rekindled my love of the series, but it left room for improvement. Xillia entered the realm looking to surpass it, and did. It isn’t a panacea, but it tells a more engaging tale, weaving in more meaningful characters. It doesn’t just improve its writing; Xillia also has an enhanced battle system where all the parts work together well. It may not have the Âproduction values of Final Fantasy, but Xillia makes up for it in charm and gusto.

At the end of the day these are mostly minor quibbles that do nothing to stop the action from being addictive or the story from being absorbing. It takes much bigger bumps in the road to keep Xillia’s journey from being enjoyable, especially if you have a long-standing love of the genre. In a world where RPGs seem to fly spastically to either extreme of the Eastern/Western spectrum, Tales is that rare, moderate candidate that sensibly takes the best of both worlds and makes it into something any fan of the genre can enjoy, without betraying what the purists love. There’s no reason for any RPG fan to miss this one.
