Pikmin 3 tells the story of three space explorers – Alph, Brittany and Charlie – who crash land on an alien planet and must collect fruit for their starving home planet. To accomplish their goal of collecting fruit, the explorers must gather and lead an army of different Pikmin creatures, battle the local wildlife and work to solve puzzles, all before the sun goes down at the end of each day.

nintendojo.com review
Pikmin 3 might not be the game that gets people rushing to buy a Wii U, but it certainly should be. The title, although with a few flaws, is simply another Nintendo masterpiece. This is finally the game that provides insight into what Nintendo is capable of with an HD console, and the future looks bright. Pikmin 3 is still a game like no other, and the many improvements over the previous two versions solidify it as one of Nintendo’s absolute best franchises, with the third and best installment being a game no one should miss out on. You’ll be left desperately hoping it is not another nine year wait until we get the next installment in the series.

While Miyamoto and company certainly made us wait quite a bit, I think you’ll agree it was worth it for Pikmin 3. It’s easily one of the best titles on the Wii U, and something that every Nintendo fan should certainly plan to pick up. If you’re worried about any development issues stemming from Pikmin 3’s Wii roots, I think you can definitely put those to rest. It really feels like a game created from the ground up for the Wii U, and benefits greatly from the added support that the GamePad brings. Despite a busy season coming up for Wii U releases, I have little doubt that Pikmin 3 will still be a standout favorite far into the Wii U’s lifecycle.

Like much of Nintendo’s strongest work, Pikmin 3 appeals to adults and children in different ways. For children the game offers the joy of seeing small people’s usefulness to adults – after all, these spacemen and women could never leave the planet without the Pikmins’ help. And, as a counterpoint, the fear – the foundational human fear – of being left behind at the end of the day. For adults, especially parents, it’s the joy of stewardship and custody, of leading directionless small people around a world, looking after them in the face of danger and, finally, delivering them safely to their beds at night. In this way the Pikmin carry a potent kernel of human experience throughout the game, one that’s truer and more powerful than any found upon the pea green plains of the Mushroom Kingdom. In this way the Pikmin deliver an enthralling, at times near-classic adventure, even if their ability to salvage the Wii-U’s fortunes remains in doubt.

It’s an unlikely standard bearer, then, but that doesn’t preclude Pikmin 3 from being a wonderful game. Denser, deeper and more intricate than its predecessors, it’s a sequel that understands refinement isn’t simply a case of adding more, even if it’s arguably as generous and complete a package as we’ve seen from Nintendo in a while. Yes, it’s a game about multitasking, forward planning and time management, but it’s also a game where you command sentient carrots to headbutt a crawfish to death. Ah, the joy of simple pleasures.

I still haven’t found all the baubles that Pikmin 3 has to offer (gosh darn secret files are so elusive!), and I can’t wait to dig back into the game over the coming days, months, and even years to try to find them all. The Pikmin series does things that no other games do, and Pikmin 3 does those things better than ever before.

Who would have thought it has been nearly 10 years since the Last Pikmin game and Nintendo have a real winner on their hands with Pikmin 3 that has not only streamlined the gameplay but seriously improved it. Best of all, the games looks gorgeous in HD and Pikmin have never looked this great! Add in some great single player challenges, multiplayer fun and you’ll be playing this game for a long time. Highly Recommended!

There’s nothing quite like Pikmin. The endearing little title characters are the absolute stars, but every aspect of the game is rich in character and spirit. Its gameplay is mostly simple and charming in singleplayer, but it becomes strategic and many-layered in a competitive context. As a result, Pikmin 3 is the most essential game in the Wii U’s current library by quite a comfortable margin.

And since most of the environments look like the inside of a garden or a creek bed, soil and rock textures are particularly realistic and unique, and vegetation floats and flaps in the breeze very naturally. Enemy bugs are massive and delightfully multi-colored as opposed to their single-textured selves of games gone by. It’s a testament to how splendid an art style can look when designed with the Wii U’s system spec in mind, and it’s all extremely easy on the eyes. It’s the most gorgeous game on Wii U right now, and is a visual treat with not a framerate stutter or hiccup in sight.

Thus, I found the best way to play the game was to primarily use the Wii Remote but have the GamePad balanced on the arm of my couch so I could crouch over it whenever I needed to use the map. It’s a somewhat awkward setup, but at least the game instantly switches back and forth between the different control schemes as soon as the player touches either controller.

Nintendo has the amazing ability to craft a game that is equally entertaining for both children and adults alike. Pikmin 3 takes the elements that made first two games so much fun and adds to it. It does exactly what a sequel should do as it retains the roots of an already great game while expanding out into new exciting territory that still feels natural. At the end of the day Pikmin 3 is a rich and exciting experience that deserves to be added to any Wii U owner’s library.

Regardless, these issues will quickly fade as Pikmin 3’s engaging storyline (including Dead Space-esque notes left behind by previous explorers) takes hold. Feelings of success and failure certainly magnify through Nintendo’s measured and player-oriented development lens, but it’s multiplied as the company explores HD resolution with timid, first-contact steps. With Wii U gamers hungry for software, Pikmin 3 offers an interstellar feast.

While the campaign doesn’t offer co-op, you can play a few special missions locally with a partner. These are based on either collecting as much fruit or defeating as many enemies as possible within a time limit. I had a blast with these, and consistently found myself shouting things like, “I’m on the apple, you take the underwater sand wall!†Two players can face off in a split-screen bingo battle mode, which is a clever riff on the game. Players are given cards with icons of different items on them. You then have to complete a line first by bringing the necessary loot back to your home base. I also found myself shouting a lot during this mode, but I can’t repeat what I was yelling here. I will say that it’s a great deal of fun.

While we would have liked to seen the development team make better use of the Wii U’s features, Pikmin 3’s stunning visuals, fiendish puzzles and incredible boss fights have seen it blossom into another treasured Nintendo franchise.

Pikmin 3 is a step in the right direction for the Wii U, but it’s only small step when what the console really requires is a few giant strides. In an ideal world all that should matter is that it’s a good game but the Wii U needs more than just games at the moment, it needs a killer app. And that is not Pikmin 3.

iven how ideally suited a touch screen is for the RTS genre, it’s disappointing to see Nintendo approach the GamePad with so little ingenuity. In fact, taking advantage of the second screen might have offered the "freshness" that’s missing from Pikmin’s return from dormancy. At the end of the day, Pikmin 3 is more of the same–a great game that happens to be on Wii U. However, what Nintendo needs most of all right now is a great Wii U game.
