Pulling off a frictionless heist is the exception to the rule in Payday 2, but the tension is still palpable as you try to orchestrate a robbery without getting caught, and the adrenaline flows steadily as you inevitably repel the barrage of police waves while trying to make your getaway. The overly expensive upgrade system and lackluster AI could use some work, but the minute-to-minute action is thrilling enough to overcome these complaints.

I’m having tons of fun playing Payday 2 and some memorable memories of heists gone wrong have been created that I will never forget. The game does a lot of things to improve on the original but has certain flaws that keep it from being a must-play. The inability to unlock gun attachments on your own terms is annoying, and the prices placed on shop items are criminal. Still, improved gunplay, cooperative excitement, and the thrill of perfect execution make Payday 2 a step in the right direction for the sleeper-hit series.

I was really looking forward to playing PayDay 2. It is such a great idea for a game. The second Batman movie was always my favourite, and PayDay 2 totally has the vibe of the bank heist that opened that film. But, remember how the Joker deals with his crew in that film? If you’re stuck playing PayDay 2 in singleplayer, or if connection problems and waiting for players to join drives you crazy, you’ll want to do the same.

Pulling off a successful heist is satisfying, to say the least, especially if you do it right. But no matter what type of job you decide to pull, the gameplay will turn into one of two games. Game #1 is the objective-based robbery simulator that has all its members doing their job. Game #2 ends up being a horde mode of police officers as you watch your drill slowly crack whatever lock you have to break to progress through the job. As before, this is always more fun with a friend or two, due to the fact that every job turns into game #2 if played by yourself. Even if a game with friends does end up being the horde-mode experience, at least you can communicate and plan your escape, something sorely missing from solo play.

It does often seem so despite itself though and Payday 2 only really earns its recommendation because there are still no other games quite like it. Or at least no others with the same setting. But although the improvements over the original prove to be disappointingly minor, for now it’s the only job in town.

Payday 2 is fun. Not the kind of slick, cinematic enjoyment you’re expecting, but a messier, anarchic experience bolstered by excellent weapon feedback and a broad choice of approaches. It simulates the botched bank job with unintentional vigour, but its shaky mechanics hold it back from becoming the smooth criminal it so wants to be. A sequel with increased complexity but no more finesse than the original. Payday 2 has a swag bag full of worthy ambitions, but overstretches when it comes to execution.

Payday 2 is a game that I really enjoy when it’s working right, which is definitely more often than not at this point. It had a rocky launch week with some broken matchmaking on PSN, but again this seems to be pretty well fixed. However, and I can’t emphasis this enough, you should really only give this game a go if you’re going to play with others. This is not a single player experience that fares well, to the point that the option could be excised completely and I would not miss it a bit. But if you’re looking for a unique co-op based shooter with a heavy focus on teamwork and objective based gameplay, you’ll have a tough time doing better than Payday 2.
