That sound, the one you’ll hear in dark abandoned cellars and subways, will absolutely haunt you. To think that the studio that once made Crash Bandicoot a household name has revitalized and redefined the survival horror genre will surprise you, but there it is. In atmosphere and narrative, Naughty Dog knows few barriers, and turning their talent and craftsmanship to such haunting and profound subject matter will ensure that the developer is poised to continue its dominance as a premier auteur development studio well into the next generation of console hardware.

part from fulfilling a basic gameplay need, the combat serves a larger purpose. It piles death upon death on Joel’s hands – each one doled out by the blade of an axe plunged into a clavicle, a boot stomping on a skull, a bullet ripping through flesh. These acts aren’t stylish or flashy. They’re messy, clumsy. Humanity is savage in The Last of Us, and Joel is the most savage of all. Ellie, meanwhile, becomes his pupil. Introduced to this world, she changes – and how could she not? Even their need for one another, what little happiness they can muster, becomes distorted, desperate.

An assured, touching, and engrossing adventure, The Last of Us represents a watershed moment for the medium. The unlikely bond that blossoms between the title’s two lead characters is both heartrending and poignantly paced – but the release delivers much more than captivating cinematics. This is a meaty slice of survival action that masterfully depicts the horrors of life in a post-pandemic setting. The conclusion may feel a little hurried, and the multiplayer somewhat surplus to requirements, but this is still an essential tale of survival that will consume you quicker than a cloud of contaminated spores.

This demonstrates two things, then: that Naughty Dog are capable of creating a universe in which the player can attach themselves, connecting solidly to the principle characters; and encapsulating those personalities is a set of mechanics that are adaptive, responsive and consistent, never feeling stretched no matter what the situation. A single arbitrary number means little, but The Last Of Us lingers, well past the credits, and weaves its way into your thoughts – tomorrow and the next day.

The gentle environmental puzzling could have stretched beyond shuffling ladders around and opening doors, but one of the game’s greatest strengths is making its quiet moments as impactful and important as its firecracker ones. Using that contrast helps to weave a story that always feels whole and connected to its gameplay.

The Last of Us highlights the human traits in us all: our instincts, our emotions, and the things we do to get by. Recently, I’ve felt troubled. Video games have been my passion for over 25 years. It’s what I do, day in and day out. It’s my escape, but it’s also my job. I haven’t felt that special “it†feeling in a while, but I get by. This industry has grown stagnant, and I’ve been seeking an elevated experience that made me feel, not just play a game. The Last of Us is exactly what I needed. It’s a hallmark of excellence in writing, design, and performance. Naughty Dog and Sony not only have a system seller on their hands, but a game that’ll define an entire console generation—a true classic that’ll be talked about and fondly regarded for years to come.

Given the plethora of zombie-based games released in recent years, it would have been easy to see this as Naughty Dog just jumping on the bandwagon and making Uncharted: The Walking Dead. Instead, the designers have taken influence from the best writing the genre has to offer (The Road, The Walking Dead, 28 Days Later) and elements of some of the best games of recent times (Arkham Asylum, Fallout, Uncharted itself) and melded them into a whole that, despite feeling familiar, ends up as more than the sum of its parts.
